installing an internal disk drive in the powerbookg3
Note: Before installing memory or a disk drive in the system; please remove the expansion bay battery, the AC adaptor or any other cables or devices connected to the computer.
Shown at the left is an Apple PowerBook G3 [Pismo w/FirePort model] with key parts labeled for removing and adding a new hard drive. Apple Power G3 [lombard or wallstreet models] have a similar configuration and this technote could be used as a reference for those models also.

Removing a hard drive from the PowerBook G3 requires a few steps to be followed carefully for successful installation:
1) Flip the keyboard over the mouse pad.
2) Remove the heat shield mounted over the processor daughter card.
3) Remove the heat pipe mounted over the daughter card.
4) Remove the processor daughter card from the computer's main logic board

5) Detach the flexible cable coming out of the disk compartment into the processor compartment.
6) Gently pull the drive out from the hard disk drive compartment; the drive with frame assembly will come out from the housing. [Tab is provided on the drive for pulling the drive.
7) Once the drive assembly is removed from the drive compartment; detach the drive from the frame. [Requires Torx screw driver for detaching the drive from the frame.]
8) Detach the flex or ribbon cable from the drive connector; use a small flat head screw driver.
9) Attach the flex cable to the new drive and install it in the drive frame.
10) Follow the steps outlined in the reverse order to install the drive back into the computer.
Boot the computer from the CD-ROM with Mac OS after installing the new drive in the system.
User Apple Drive Setup Disk Utilities that comes with the Mac OS to "Initialize" the drive.

The drive should show up on the Mac Desktop.
